President Donald Trump criticized federal holidays like Juneteenth that cost the country billions of dollars. Trump previously supported the Juneteenth federal holiday every year during his first term in office.
Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in America. It fell on June 19 and will also be observed on the third Saturday of the month (June 21).
Trump did not mention or acknowledge Juneteenth on Thursday. But he did suggest that federal holidays such as Juneteenth are “too many non-working holidays in America.”
In a post on his Truth Social app on Thursday, Trump wrote that the holidays cost “$BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed”.
He added that federal workers “don’t want” the holidays and that “soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year.”
Trump’s post sparked backlash on social media. One follower wrote, “You lost me here, Americans are already overworked and in many cases underpaid.”
Juneteenth is commemorated on June 19, to celebrate the freedom of enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Former President Joe Biden established June 19 as a federal holiday in 2021.
