Vincent Pastore, the Bronx-born character actor forever etched in television history as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on HBO’s landmark series The Sopranos, passed away on Saturday, August 1m at the age of 80.
Pastore’s body was discovered on Saturday at his home on City Island in the Bronx by a longtime friend and neighbor after he had not been heard from for several days.
Police sources indicated the death appeared to be from natural causes, with no signs of criminality, according to a report from the New York Post. A close friend, Stephen Villano, who described himself as Pastore’s “right-hand man,” said the actor “went to sleep and didn’t wake up.”
Pastore, a prostate cancer survivor who had been diagnosed in 2014, was reportedly in good health recently. He had celebrated his 80th birthday on July 14 with cake and friends just weeks earlier and had undergone a routine physical.
His longtime manager Robert Attermann confirmed the news and issued a heartfelt statement. “I had the privilege of representing Vinny for more than 30 years, long before The Sopranos made him a household name. To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable ‘Big Pussy,’ but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more,” Atterman said.
“Vinny was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known. He treated everyone with warmth and respect, never turning down a fan who wanted a photograph or an autograph. He genuinely appreciated the people who supported him and always made them feel valued. He loved being an actor. He was passionate about his craft and was always encouraging, respectful, and generous with young actors, taking the time to offer guidance and support whenever he could,” he added. “For me, losing Vinny is deeply personal. Over more than three decades, I had the honor of watching not only his remarkable career but also the incredible person he was. I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humor, and his heart.”
Born on July 14, 1946, in the Bronx and raised in nearby New Rochelle, Pastore served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before studying drama at Pace University. He spent two decades owning and operating nightclubs in the New York area, entering acting relatively late, around age 42.
Early film roles included bit parts in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990) and Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way (1993). He gained further recognition as the mobster Angelo Ruggiero in the 1996 HBO film Gotti opposite Armand Assante.
It was The Sopranos, which premiered in 1999, that defined his career. Pastore played a leading role alongside James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano’s trusted childhood friend and associate, an arc that is widely recognized as one of the most memorable in the show’s run. All told, he appeared in 30 episodes of the iconic series and is recognized as one of its most visible stars.
In later years, Pastore remained active and versatile. He hosted The Wiseguy Show on SiriusXM, appeared on reality programs including Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars, and continued working in film and television with credits in projects such as The Birthday Cake (2021), Gravesend, The Curse (2024), and a voice role in Yellowjackets (2025).
He also toured with co-stars for Talking Sopranos events, performed in a rock band called the Gangster Squad, and stayed deeply connected to his Bronx community, supporting veterans, charities including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and local causes.
Tributes from Sopranos co-stars poured in quickly. “Our beloved friend and collaborator VINCENT PASTORE has passed away. This is a hard one for us, it seems like I’ve known Vinny forever. We did lots of work together and traveled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs. Vinny was a kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends. I will miss him always,” Michael Imperioli posted on Instagram.
Lorraine Bracco called him “such a funny & charming man… just a beautiful soul. Absolutely heartbreaking.” Edie Falco said, “It’s an awful loss. So unexpected. Vinnie was always so full of life.”
