The long-simmering legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group (UMG) is back on high heat.
On Aug. 12, Drake’s legal team filed two motions demanding that UMG hand over high-stakes documents related to the release and promotion of Kendrick Lamar’s song, “Not Like Us.” The chart-topping diss track, released in 2024, insinuates that Drake and his associates are involved with pedophilia, among other things.
It’s still hard to believe that Drake’s defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group won’t be settled out of court, given the confidential information that would be revealed for all (including rivals) to see in a trial.
But as things stand, the lawsuit continues, and Drake’s legal team have revealed their latest move: filing motions seeking a court order to force UMG to hand over emails and other ‘custodial files’ of its boss Sir Lucian Grainge, as well as “an unredacted copy of Kendrick Lamar’s recording contract with UMG”.
The filings go into more detail about what information Drake’s team is seeking and why, as well as its allegations that the major label has been unwilling to disclose it.
