President Donald Trump on Tuesday sharply criticized members of the former House January 6 committee, accusing them of misconduct and demanding accountability for what he claims was the destruction of investigative records.
In a statement posted publicly, Trump alleged that the committee — which he referred to as an “Unselect Committee of political hacks and thugs” — illegally deleted and destroyed information related to its investigation of the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach. Trump claimed the alleged actions were taken because the findings ultimately favored him.
“The reason they did this is because it all came out my way,” Trump said, asserting that he was “proven innocent” while accusing committee members of dishonesty. He called for those involved to be held accountable and said they should “pay a very steep price.”

The January 6 committee, led by Democrats with two Republican members, conducted its investigation during the Biden administration and released a final report in late 2022. Committee leaders previously stated that records were preserved in accordance with House rules and transferred to the National Archives, a claim that has been disputed by Trump and his allies.
Trump’s comments come as Republicans continue to push for renewed scrutiny of the committee’s actions, arguing that the investigation was politically motivated and lacked transparency. Calls for further investigations into the committee have intensified among Trump supporters as the former president presses his broader campaign message centered on accountability, government reform, and what he describes as the weaponization of federal institutions.
