Japan honored America’s 250th anniversary on the evening of Friday, July 3, with an epic drone and light display in Tokyo. The event took place over Tokyo Bay in the Odaiba area, with Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge serving as the primary backdrop. It formed part of the U.S. State Department’s Freedom 250 Global Illumination Initiative, which is set to activate red, white, and blue lighting on landmarks in dozens of countries between July 2 and 5.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo organized the display in partnership with local entities. Tokyo Tower, the Rainbow Bridge, and the Tokyo Aqua Symphony fountains were illuminated in red, white, and blue from approximately 7 p.m. to midnight on July 3. Fireworks were launched over Tokyo Bay and Odaiba.
A drone light show featured formations including illuminated figures of the Statue of Liberty and President Donald Trump, along with synchronized fountain effects. One image portrayed President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi during their first meeting earlier this year,
The U.S. Embassy promoted public viewing of the illuminations and encouraged residents and visitors to share photographs and videos using the hashtag #A250inJapan. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi attended in person.
The display occurred alongside broader U.S.-Japan activities, including Japan’s earlier gift of 250 cherry blossom trees to the United States as a symbol of friendship, continuing a tradition that began in 1912.

Similar illuminations and tributes occurred in multiple countries as part of the global America 250 observances. In France, the City of Paris organized a projection on the Eiffel Tower that illuminated the structure in red, white, and blue, including the number “250.”
The display began at 11:00 p.m. local time on July 3, 2026, and formed the centerpiece of France’s America 250 cultural program. It referenced the historical Franco-American alliance dating to the American Revolutionary War, including the role of the Marquis de Lafayette and France’s gift of the Statue of Liberty.
In Australia, 27 sites across Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, and Darwin were lit in the colors of the U.S. flag. Examples in Melbourne included Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Town Hall, and the Arts Centre spire. Other cities featured bridges, government buildings, and stadiums.
The Freedom 250 Global Illumination Initiative extended to additional locations, including the Washington Monument in the United States and sites coordinated through various U.S. embassies abroad.
