Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) says this year’s tax season is showing a sharp increase in refunds, which he attributes to provisions in the tax legislation championed by President Donald Trump.
Smith said refunds are up roughly 11% compared with last year and described the current filing period as potentially the largest refund season in U.S. history. He argued that recently implemented tax provisions are beginning to show tangible benefits for working Americans.
“American taxpayers are filing their taxes and they are facing the largest tax refund season in the history of America,” Smith said, pointing to policies such as eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime pay, along with targeted relief for seniors.
The congressman said constituents in his district have already reported significant gains, including one individual he claims expects a refund exceeding $6,000 due to the new tax treatment of tips and overtime income.
Supporters of the law argue the changes are boosting take-home pay and easing pressure on households still coping with elevated costs. Critics, however, caution that refund size alone does not necessarily reflect long-term tax burden and note that broader fiscal impacts of the legislation will take years to evaluate.
