A senior official set to join the incoming administration of New York City Public Advocate Zohran Mamdani is drawing intense backlash after stating that the city will only assist in the arrest or deportation of undocumented immigrants after they have caused severe harm — or even killed — an American citizen.
The comments, captured in a recent Spectrum News video and circulating widely online, outline what critics say is an extreme extension of New York City’s sanctuary policies.
According to the footage, the aide — who will serve as Mamdani’s incoming Chief of Staff — said the city would not cooperate with federal immigration authorities unless an undocumented individual committed a violent or deadly attack. The statement immediately triggered concern among residents, law enforcement advocates, and political leaders who argue the policy puts public safety at risk.
Opponents called the stance dangerous, claiming it signals that New York City will ignore immigration violations and lesser criminal offenses until serious tragedy occurs.
Supporters of the administration, however, argue that the goal is to prevent local law enforcement from being used as an extension of federal immigration authorities. They say the policy is meant to protect immigrant communities and ensure people are not deported for nonviolent offenses.
Mamdani, a prominent progressive official, has long been critical of ICE and has vowed to expand sanctuary measures across the city. His incoming team’s latest statements appear to reaffirm that direction — but with wording that has sparked new controversy and debate.
The administration has not yet issued an official clarification or expanded statement on the remarks.
