President Donald Trump on Tuesday drew renewed attention to Rep. Ilhan Omar after posting claims questioning a dramatic change in her reported personal finances and her legislative role tied to programs now linked to large-scale fraud investigations.
In his video post, that highlighted figures circulating online that allege Omar’s net worth shifted from negative territory to tens of millions of dollars over a relatively short period of time. Trump did not release financial documents himself, but said the discrepancy warrants serious scrutiny and transparency, particularly given Omar’s position and influence in Congress.
The president also pointed to Omar’s sponsorship and support of legislation that expanded access to certain federal and state aid programs. Several of those programs, particularly in Minnesota, have since been rocked by investigations into Somali-linked fraud schemes involving daycare, food assistance, and social services. Federal and state authorities have already charged or convicted multiple individuals in related cases, with losses totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
