Washington, D.C. — Senator Bill Hagerty has confirmed that he introduced legislation aimed at preventing illegal aliens from being counted in the U.S. Census, but says the effort was blocked outright by Democrats in Congress.
According to Hagerty, the proposal was designed to ensure that congressional representation and federal funding are based solely on lawful residents, as intended under the Constitution. He argued that counting illegal aliens in the Census unfairly shifts political power and taxpayer resources away from American citizens and toward states that fail to enforce immigration laws.
“The Census determines representation, funding, and political power,” Hagerty said. “Allowing illegal aliens to be counted dilutes the voice of American citizens and rewards lawlessness.”
Hagerty confirmed that despite Republican support, the measure failed to advance because Democrats voted as a bloc to stop it. He accused the Democratic Party of prioritizing political advantage over election integrity and constitutional principles.
Supporters of President Donald Trump say the issue highlights a clear contrast between the Trump administration’s America First agenda and Democrats’ immigration policies. President Trump has consistently argued that illegal immigration undermines wages, strains public services, and weakens the political rights of U.S. citizens. Blocking illegal aliens from being counted in the Census has been a longstanding goal of Trump-aligned lawmakers.
Republicans argue that counting illegal aliens inflates congressional seats and Electoral College votes in certain states, effectively giving more power to politicians who support open-border policies. Democrats, on the other hand, have defended current Census practices, claiming they are necessary for funding and planning purposes.
Hagerty said the fight is far from over and vowed to continue pushing for reforms that protect American citizens’ representation.
“This is about fairness,” he said. “Citizens should not lose political power because Democrats refuse to enforce immigration law.”
The debate over who is counted in the Census is expected to remain a major political issue as President Trump and congressional Republicans continue efforts to restore border security and election integrity.
