President Donald Trump sharply criticized Democratic leaders, accusing them of using the term “affordability” as a political talking point while failing to address what he described as the root causes of inflation that occurred under their leadership.
Speaking at a policy event, Trump argued that Democrats “never talk about specifics” when discussing economic issues.
“They look at you and say… AFFORDABILITY. They don’t say anything else,” Trump said. “This election is about affordability — then they go to the next subject. It’s a con job.”
Trump claimed that consumer prices, including food staples such as eggs, rose dramatically during the Biden administration, which he argued contributed to “the highest prices and worst inflation in history.” He asserted that his administration has since worked to bring prices down.
“Everything was through the roof with them,” Trump said. “Eggs were four times higher. We got the prices down.”
He also criticized the Inflation Reduction Act, saying Democrats “admitted it had nothing to do with inflation,” framing it as another example of what he called misleading political branding.
Trump’s comments reflect his broader campaign narrative that Democratic economic policies led to historic inflation and that his administration is focused on reversing those trends. Democrats, meanwhile, have defended their affordability messaging by pointing to programs designed to cut healthcare, prescription drug, and energy costs.
