England’s dramatic World Cup win over Mexico ended with a brutal twist when veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson was hospitalized after suffering a serious wrist injury during the postgame celebration.
Henderson, 36, was hurt Sunday after England’s 3-2 Round of 16 victory at Mexico City’s famed Azteca Stadium.
The Brentford midfielder did not play in the match, but he joined teammates after the final whistle as the squad celebrated with traveling fans behind the goal.
The players were singing “Wonderwall,” the Oasis classic that has become England’s unofficial anthem this summer, when Henderson fell over an advertising board and landed awkwardly.
He stayed down on the field as teammates and staff quickly realized the injury was serious.
England players, including Dan Burn and Declan Rice, looked on as medical staff treated Henderson and formed a huddle around him.
The former Liverpool captain was given oxygen and taken off the field on a stretcher.
England manager Thomas Tuchel later told the BBC that Henderson had suffered “a quite serious” wrist injury and was in the hospital.
Henderson stayed in Mexico City on Sunday night with a member of England’s traveling staff instead of flying back with the rest of the squad to its training base in Kansas City, Missouri, according to ESPN.
The Athletic reported Monday that Henderson is expected to miss the rest of the tournament and will require wrist surgery.

PEOPLE said it reached out to the Football Association but did not immediately receive a response.
The freak injury came after one of England’s wildest World Cup wins in years.
Jude Bellingham put England in control early, scoring twice to give the Three Lions a 2-0 lead.
Mexico cut the deficit before halftime through Julián Quiñones, making it 2-1 at the break.
The match turned chaotic in the second half when England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off, forcing Tuchel’s team to survive with 10 men.
Harry Kane later converted a penalty for England before Mexico’s Raúl Jiménez answered with a penalty of his own.
England held on for the 3-2 win, knocking out Mexico in front of a hostile home crowd at the Azteca.
Even without playing, Henderson picked up a yellow card in the closing stages.
The victory sent England into the quarterfinals, where it will face Norway on Saturday, July 11.
Norway advanced after Erling Haaland’s side stunned five-time World Cup winner Brazil 2-1 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
The quarterfinal will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 5 p.m. local time.
For England, the win was historic.
