Dramatic footage has emerged showing a house floating down a river in Ruidoso, New Mexico, as torrential rains triggered severe flooding throughout the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque has issued a flash flood emergency, urging residents to immediately seek higher ground.
The emergency alert warns of rapidly rising waters and dangerous debris flows, particularly in areas recently affected by wildfires, where the landscape is unable to absorb heavy rainfall.
“A DANGEROUS situation is unfolding in RUIDOSO!” NWS Albuquerque stated. “A FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY remains in effect! Seek HIGHER GROUND NOW!”
Officials say multiple roads have become impassable, and at least one structure—captured on video—was seen being carried downstream by the powerful current. Emergency responders are working to evacuate vulnerable neighborhoods and assist stranded residents.
Local law enforcement and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security have activated flood response protocols, deploying swift-water rescue teams and urging residents to avoid driving through floodwaters.
“Do NOT attempt to drive through the floodwaters,” NWS added. “The current will carry away your vehicle.”
Ruidoso, a mountain resort town, is especially prone to flooding due to its steep terrain and limited drainage. The current flooding is being described as the worst the area has seen in recent years.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported as of Wednesday morning, but authorities continue to monitor conditions closely as the situation develops.
