Tina Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk currently incarcerated in a Colorado state facility, has been moved to solitary confinement after filing a grievance against a prison teacher, according to a statement released by her legal team on X.
Peters’ team claims she reported the teacher after inmates informed her that the staff member had allegedly made comments suggesting she would “never leave prison” and that “the state will never let her out.” According to the statement, Peters confronted the teacher in a hallway, which led to verbal hostility from both the teacher and several inmates.
Following the confrontation, Peters reportedly submitted an official grievance early Tuesday. Shortly afterward, she was taken for a medical and mental-health evaluation, which included a strip search, an assessment by facility clinicians, and several hours of waiting, according to the post.
Her legal team says Peters was then informed she would be placed in solitary confinement due to an internal affairs investigation linked to the incident. She was advised the process could last up to 17 days. Prison officials told her she is “not being punished,” the statement says, adding that she was allowed to keep her tablet device, though without internet access.
Peters is now being held in a windowless cell with limited contact and will reportedly be permitted out of her cell for only one to two hours each day. Her team noted the timing was particularly difficult, as the move occurred on the eve of her mother’s 97th birthday.
Supporters are urging the public to “pray for Tina” and to donate to an online fund supporting her legal expenses, claiming she is being “targeted” due to her political affiliations. State corrections officials have not released a public statement confirming or responding to the allegations as of the time of publishing.
Peters, who was convicted in connection with breaches of voting-machine security in Mesa County, has been described by allies as a political prisoner. State and federal authorities have previously rejected such claims.
