WASHINGTON, D.C. — 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom remains hospitalized in critical condition after being shot Wednesday near the White House in what authorities have described as a targeted, “ambush-style” attack.
According to law-enforcement officials, the assailant opened fire on Beckstrom and a fellow Guardsman, identified as Andrew Wolfe, while the two were on patrol. Both were struck, undergone surgery, and remain under medical care.
According to a family statement cited in recent reporting, Beckstrom’s father says she has what he described as a “mortal wound,” expressing grave concern that her injuries may be unsurvivable. The family asked for prayers as they confront what could become a tragic outcome.
Prosecutors have charged the assailant, identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national, with multiple counts — including assault with intent to kill — with potential for first-degree murder charges depending on the victims’ condition.
Investigators say the suspect drove across the country to Washington, D.C., and carried out the attack near a metro station just blocks from the White House. The case is being investigated as a potential act of terrorism.
Officials have warned the public the investigation remains ongoing. As of the latest update, both guardsmen remain in critical condition and their loved ones are waiting anxiously for more information.
