Senator Tuberville Calls for Ban on Muslim Immigrants After D.C. Guard Shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tommy Tuberville has called for an “immediate ban” on what he terms “Islam immigrants” following a shooting in Washington, D.C., that wounded two National Guard soldiers.

On social media, Tuberville wrote that the Afghan national accused in the attack was “welcomed into this country with open arms by Joe Biden,” and demanded authorities “IMMEDIATELY BAN all ISLAM immigrants” and “DEPORT every single Islamist who is living among us just waiting to attack.”

He described the shooting as a “disgusting act of violence” and called for swift justice for the two guardsmen.

The Context: Recent Legislation and Views

Tuberville has previously sponsored legislation aimed at restricting Islamic influence in U.S. law and policy. Earlier this year, he introduced the No Sharia Act and the Preserving a Sharia Free America Act, which would ban application of Sharia law in the U.S. where it conflicts with constitutional rights and block immigration for foreign nationals advocating for it.

He has publicly described “radical Islamic extremism” as a threat to national security and American values.

Response from Other Republicans and Democrats

Some Republican lawmakers have echoed calls for a broader immigration crackdown — with at least two members saying in social media posts that now is the time to “deport Islamists.”

Meanwhile, Muslim-rights advocates and civil-liberties groups have condemned Tuberville’s remarks and legislation as discriminatory and unconstitutional. The Council on American‑Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently denounced the proposed Sharia-related bills as a direct attack on religious freedom and a political stunt that unfairly targets Muslim communities.
