Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson is facing intense backlash after describing the brutal shooting of National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., as an “unfortunate accident.”
The incident — where National Guard members were shot in the head while serving on duty — has been widely condemned as a deliberate act of political violence. Critics say Thompson’s comments minimize the severity of the attack and signal a dangerous shift in how Democrats downplay threats against U.S. service members.
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem immediately blasted Thompson’s characterization, calling it outrageous and detached from reality:
“Unfortunate accident?! It was a TERRORIST ATTACK. They shot our Guardsmen in the HEAD,” Noem said, underscoring the seriousness of the assault and demanding full accountability.
