Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican lawmaker and close ally of President Donald Trump, said he is pursuing efforts aimed at removing Rep. Ilhan Omar from Congress and has gone further by arguing she should not remain in the United States.
In public remarks, Fine criticized Omar’s past statements and positions, saying they exemplify what he believes are failures in U.S. immigration policy. He argued that lawmakers should openly debate her record on the House floor rather than through political fundraising appeals, framing his comments as a response to emails Omar sent to supporters calling for his expulsion from Congress.
Fine said his concerns go beyond congressional discipline, claiming that U.S. immigration policies have allowed in individuals who, in his view, do not share American values. He described Omar as a symbol of those policies and said any effort against her should be handled through formal legislative processes.
Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota, is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Somalia and has previously faced criticism from Republicans over her rhetoric on U.S. foreign policy and immigration. No formal motion to expel her from Congress has been introduced, and deportation of a sitting member of Congress would face significant legal and constitutional barriers.
The comments reflect growing tensions in Congress as President Trump and his allies continue to press a hardline agenda on immigration, national loyalty, and accountability for elected officials they accuse of undermining American interests.
