President Donald Trump sharply criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar during recent remarks, calling into question her rhetoric about the United States and contrasting it with the ongoing instability in her country of origin, Somalia.
“I don’t want to see Somalia,” President Trump said. “I don’t want to see a woman that marries her brother to get in, becomes a congressman, and does nothing but complain.”
Trump continued by arguing that Omar, a frequent critic of U.S. foreign and domestic policy, should focus her attention on conditions abroad rather than attacking the country that granted her citizenship and elected her to Congress.
“And yet her country’s a mess,” Trump said. “Let her go back and fix up her own country.”
The comments come amid renewed debate over immigration, national loyalty, and the role of elected officials who consistently portray the United States in a negative light on the world stage. Trump has long argued that public officials should prioritize American interests and show gratitude toward the nation they serve.
Supporters of the president say his remarks reflect frustration shared by many Americans who believe radical lawmakers benefit from U.S. freedoms while undermining the country’s values and institutions. Trump has repeatedly emphasized that criticism of America should be paired with solutions — not contempt.
