Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is calling for a criminal indictment of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison following explosive allegations that Ellison attempted to assist individuals accused of defrauding the state out of billions of dollars.
During a heated exchange, Hawley accused Ellison of intervening on behalf of alleged fraudsters and accepting a campaign contribution shortly after meeting with them.
“You took $10,000 from them nine days after the meeting!” Hawley charged. “You helped fraudsters defraud the state of $9 billion, and you got a fat campaign contribution out of it! You ought to be indicted!”
Hawley further claimed that audio recordings exist in which Ellison allegedly offered to obtain the names of investigators looking into the case.
“You said: send me the names of these folks investigating them. You said it. ‘I’ll take the list, call the person at Education, and say, what’s going on?!’” Hawley stated. “They came to you asking for help getting investigators off their backs! Why’d you do it, why’d you help them?!”
Ellison firmly denied the accusations during the exchange.
“I didn’t do it!” Ellison responded when confronted with the claims.
Hawley, however, rejected the denial, responding sharply, “That’s not you? Is that a ventriloquist?!”
