The Iranian regime on Sunday responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that a second round of talks between the two sides will be convening on Monday.
According to a report from Iran’s state-controlled Tasnim News Agency, Tehran’s participation remains conditional on the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade in the region.
The announcement came just hours after rump stated that an American delegation would travel to Islamabad for further negotiations. In a Truth Social post, Trump described the U.S. proposal as “a very fair and reasonable DEAL” and expressed hope that Iran would accept it.
He further warned that if an agreement failed to materialize, the United States would target Iranian infrastructure and resume the conflict. “The United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!” the president wrote.
In the same post, Trump accused Iran of violating the current ceasefire by firing on ships in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day, describing the incident as “A Total Violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.” He noted that affected vessels included those linked to U.S. allies France and the United Kingdom.
The planned talks represent the second attempt at direct negotiations following the first round held in Islamabad the previous week. Those discussions, which took place on April 11-12, lasted approximately 21 hours but failed to produce a deal.
The U.S. delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance and included envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, while the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Vance stated afterward that Iran had not provided the necessary commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.
Sunday’s developments occur against the backdrop of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran that took effect earlier this month and is set to expire on April 22. The truce, mediated in part by Pakistan, has been described by both sides as fragile. It includes provisions related to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and a pause in direct hostilities.
The U.S. has maintained a blockade of Iranian ports throughout the truce, which has been described by Tehran as a major sticking point in negotiations.
