House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries just showed America exactly why Democrats can’t be trusted on ethics or accountability. Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was indicted for swiping over $5 million in taxpayer-funded FEMA disaster relief and COVID cash meant for Americans in crisis. She allegedly funneled it through her family’s business, laundered the proceeds, blew some on a diamond ring, and even used millions to bankroll her own congressional campaign. The House Ethics Committee already nailed her for multiple violations. This is straight-up theft from disaster victims.
But instead of demanding she be expelled like any real leader would, Jeffries played his usual spineless game in a new press conference. When asked point-blank if it would be a “vote of conscience for Democrats to determine what should be done with Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick,” he dodged like a coward: “We’ll have a conversation as a caucus in the aftermath of the recommendations that we anticipate at some point this week from the Ethics Committee.” He kept rambling about proceeding “in a manner consistent with our approach to these types of ethics matters which is to always and at all times follow the facts and apply the relevant law without fear or favor.”
Translation from the king of the swamp: Don’t expect Democrats to actually punish one of their own crooks. This is the same Jeffries who already called expulsion a “hard no” and hid behind “presumption of innocence” for a colleague caught red-handed ripping off taxpayers. While families hit by hurricanes and wildfires beg for real FEMA help, Jeffries treats federal disaster funds like a Democrat slush fund and protects the thief who stole them. No outrage. No action. Just endless “conversations” and excuses.
This is peak Democrat hypocrisy. They scream about “threats to democracy” and drag Republicans through endless ethics probes, but when one of theirs gets busted for fraud that hurts struggling Americans, suddenly it’s all talk and no expulsion. Jeffries isn’t leading—he’s enabling the rot. Taxpayers deserve better than this clown show.
