Prominent Democrat Ditches The Party, Registers As Republican

Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz is officially breaking with Democrats after more than six decades, saying the party he once backed has taken a turn he can’t support.

The longtime liberal announced he is registering as a Republican, pointing to what he described as growing “hostility” toward Israel and a broader ideological shift inside the Democratic Party.

Dershowitz made clear he’s not just switching labels; he plans to get involved in stopping Democrats from reclaiming power in Washington.

“I intend to work hard to prevent the Democrats from gaining control of the House… and Senate, and I urge those who share my concerns about the increasing influence of radicalisms in the Democratic Party to vote, campaign and contribute for continued Republican control of Congress.”

The prominent constitutional lawyer has spent years warning that Democrats are drifting too far left, especially on foreign policy and civil liberties.

In explaining his break, Dershowitz argued the party no longer reflects the values he once supported, particularly when it comes to Israel and free expression. He has repeatedly criticized what he sees as “radical” elements gaining influence inside the party.

Dershowitz has long styled himself as a civil libertarian willing to challenge both sides, but in recent years his criticism has been aimed squarely at Democrats, whom he says have abandoned core principles.

He has also warned that politicizing the legal system poses a serious risk, arguing in past commentary that targeting political opponents “really endangers democracy.”

Now, after decades as a registered Democrat, Dershowitz is throwing his weight behind Republicans, saying a Democratic return to power would push the country further down a path he believes is “bad for America.”

The move caps a steady evolution for the high-profile legal scholar, who had already distanced himself from the Democratic Party in recent years before making the switch official.
