REPORT: US Considering Brutal Punishment For UK Over Lackluster Support In Iran

The UK is pushing back after a leaked Pentagon email suggested the United States may consider reviewing diplomatic support for Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands, a move described as a possible response to what U.S. officials view as allies’ weak backing during the war on Iran.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said Britain’s position is not up for debate.

“We could not be clearer about the UK’s position on the Falkland Islands. It’s long-standing. It’s unchanged,” a spokesman said. “Sovereignty rests with the UK, and the islands’ right to self-determination is paramount. That’s been our consistent position and will remain the case.”

The spokesman added: “The PM has been clear repeatedly that he won’t be pressured. He will always take a strong position on the UK’s national interests, and the Falklands is no different to that.”

The controversy erupted Friday after Reuters reported on leaked Pentagon emails outlining potential “punishments” for NATO allies that did not assist the U.S. and Israel in strikes against Iran. One proposal, the email said, would be to reassess diplomatic support for long-standing European “imperial possessions,” including the Falklands.

An official familiar with the email told Reuters that granting access, basing and overflight rights during the conflict was seen as “just the absolute baseline for Nato.”

Starmer initially rejected a U.S. request to allow aircraft to conduct attacks from British military bases, including Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, but later agreed to allow defensive missions to protect residents amid Iranian retaliation, according to the report.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Starmer’s reluctance to join the conflict and has mocked the UK’s military posture, including a jab about “two old, broken-down aircraft carriers.”

The State Department website notes the Falkland Islands are administered by the United Kingdom but claimed by Argentina. Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, is a libertarian and a Trump ally.

The Falklands War in 1982 saw the Reagan administration back Britain’s effort to retake the islands after Argentina’s invasion, after initially staying neutral. The conflict left about 650 Argentine soldiers and 255 British troops dead before Argentina surrendered.

The leaked Pentagon email also floated other hardball options, including suspending Spain from NATO, according to Reuters. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been Europe’s most outspoken critic of the war in Iran and did not allow Spain’s bases or airspace to be used for attacks, the report said. The U.S. operates key facilities in Spain, including Naval Station Rota and Morón Air Base.

The policy menu described in the email was intended to send a signal to NATO allies and reduce “the sense of entitlement on the part of the Europeans,” an official said, summarizing the document. The email appeared to rule out revoking U.S. NATO membership.

Trump has ramped up public frustration with NATO allies in recent weeks. He has said he is considering pulling the U.S. out of the alliance and has called NATO a “paper tiger,” according to the report.

Britain, France and other allies have argued that joining the U.S. naval blockade would amount to entering the war, but said they would be willing to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open once there is a lasting ceasefire or the conflict ends.
