Obama Admits To ‘Tension’ In Marriage, Blames Trump

Former President Barack Obama is opening up about friction at home as he ramps up his public role during President Donald Trump’s administration.

In an interview published May 4 by The New Yorker, Obama said his increased political engagement has caused strain in his marriage to former first lady Michelle Obama.

“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” Obama told the magazine. “It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her.”

Obama initially kept a low profile during Trump’s first term, following the longstanding tradition of former presidents avoiding direct criticism of their successors. That approach didn’t last. Over time, he began speaking out more frequently.

Now, during Trump’s second administration, Obama has taken on a much more visible role, emerging as one of the president’s most prominent critics.

“People aren’t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents,” he told the magazine. “They don’t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office.”

Obama argued that Trump’s “recklessness” pushed him back into the political arena, pointing to issues ranging from the U.S. exit from the Paris climate accords to changes targeting the Affordable Care Act, his signature domestic policy law.

His return to the spotlight has been more extensive than he originally intended, he told the magazine.

The former president has also leaned heavily into social media, using his platform to rally Democrats on key issues. That includes a recent push tied to redistricting efforts in Virginia.

According to publicly available data on X, five posts Obama sent urging Virginians to back a ballot measure redrawing congressional districts drew more than 220 million views.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack. Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections,” Obama wrote in a March 5 post.

Michelle Obama has also stepped further into the public conversation, using podcasts and other media appearances to voice criticism of the Trump administration.

The former president has previously acknowledged challenges in his marriage. In 2025, he said he had been “digging myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle” after she skipped both the January funeral for former President Jimmy Carter and Trump’s second inauguration.
