U.S. Ally Dispatches Warship Ahead Of Possible Hormuz Strait Mission

The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed that HMS Dragon, a Type 45 air-defence destroyer, will deploy to the Middle East. The vessel will pre-position in the region ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow,” a spokesperson for the U.K. Ministry of Defense told Bloomberg.

HMS Dragon, which carries a crew of around 200, is one of six Type 45 destroyers in the Royal Navy. It was originally deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in March 2026 to defend British bases on Cyprus, including RAF Akrotiri, following an Iranian drone strike on the base.

The ship arrived in the eastern Mediterranean after a rapid departure from Portsmouth and later underwent a period of maintenance there due to a minor technical issue before being made ready for further operations. Its repositioning from the eastern Mediterranean will allow it to contribute more directly to operations in the Gulf region if required.

The proposed mission, which has been championed by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, would involve a coalition of nations working to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas and other goods had passed prior to the eruption of the current conflict on February 28.

The United Kingdom has indicated its willingness to participate in efforts to reopen the waterway once conditions permit safe transit. Defense Secretary John Healey previously noted that Iran had been “holding the strait of Hormuz hostage by laying mines, targeting ships, including Red Ensign vessels, and putting lives in danger,” and that the UK was “determined that the UK plays a leading role in securing the strait so commercial ships can move freely and confidently again.”

President Donald Trump has long called on other nations to help open the strait. “Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” the president posted on Truth Social not long before the ceasefire was agreed to.
