JUST IN: Gunmen In San Diego Mosque Shooting Identified

Authorities have identified the two teenage suspects in Monday’s shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18. Both died from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The shooting occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) in the Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood. The center is the largest mosque in San Diego County and includes a school, which was in session at the time of the shooting.

Three people were shot and killed near the center’s entrance, one of whom was described as a security guard, according to a San Diego Police Department spokesman. The two shooters, who have been identified by the FBI as aged 17 and 19, were found deceased from self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a car not far from the scene of the shooting.

Victim names have not been released pending family notification. Officials noted that deceased security guard intervened to stop the attack and “no doubt saved lives.”

No officers discharged their weapons, and the threat was neutralized by approximately 1:07 p.m. All children and staff at the adjacent school were reported safe and evacuated.

A landscaper working nearby was also fired upon but sustained no injuries.

One suspect reportedly took a firearm from his parents’ home before the incident and left a suicide note. Police did not share any additional details on the contents of the suicide note, nor did they disclose where search warrants were being executed as of this report.

The mother of one of the gunmen told police that her son was suicidal and stole multiple weapons from her vehicle. Police further revealed that no specific threats were made against the center prior to the shooting, nor was it referenced in the suicide note.

According to information reported by The New York Times, investigators found anti-Islamic writing in the vehicle where the suspects were located. The words “hate speech” were also written on one of the firearms used in the attack.

Authorities are examining these materials, along with other evidence, to determine the full circumstances and any potential motivations. The investigation involves the San Diego Police Department, the FBI, and other agencies, all of whom are asking anyone with knowledge of the shooting or the suspects’ motivations to contact law enforcement.

Officials including Mayor Todd Gloria and Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences and noted enhanced security at other houses of worship.

The Islamic Center serves as a major community hub with a school offering Arabic, Islamic studies, and other programs. Imam Taha Hassane described the event as outrageous and emphasized the center’s role in interfaith activities.
