Iran’s Supreme Leader Sparks Alarm After Fiery Anti-U.S. Posts Trigger ‘Jihad’ Warnings

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is facing mounting backlash after a series of fiery anti-American posts and speeches triggered warnings from lawmakers and analysts that the rhetoric could fuel calls for “jihad” against the United States and its allies.

The controversy erupted after Khamenei and several top Iranian officials intensified anti-U.S. messaging amid rising tensions in the Middle East. In recent remarks, Khamenei accused the United States and Israel of leading what he called a campaign of aggression against Iran and the Islamic world. Iranian state-linked outlets and political figures have echoed those sentiments in increasingly militant terms.

“By earnestly pursuing the correct, necessary policy of population growth, the great Iranian nation will be able to play a major role and experience strategic leaps in the future, taking long strides toward building the new Islamic-Iranian civilization,” Khamenei wrote on X.

“Among the most valuable achievements of the Third Sacred Defense [against the American and Zionist invasion] is the emergence of Iran at the level of a major, influential power. Imam Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, has responded to a letter from a number of activists in the field of population growth,” he finished Tuesday.

Members of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission warned earlier this year that any attack on Iran’s supreme leader would amount to “war against the entire Islamic world” and could lead to the issuance of a formal jihad declaration by Islamic clerics.

Khamenei himself has repeatedly lashed out at President Donald Trump in public statements and social media posts, calling him a “criminal” and accusing the United States of trying to destabilize Iran through sanctions, military pressure, and support for anti-regime protests.

The renewed rhetoric comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain dangerously high following months of military escalation, proxy conflicts, and threats involving U.S. and Israeli interests across the region. American officials have warned that Iran-backed groups remain active throughout the Middle East and continue to pose threats to U.S. personnel and allies.

The rhetoric has also coincided with increasingly aggressive messaging from Iran-backed groups online. U.S. prosecutors recently charged an alleged terror operative tied to an Iran-backed militia with plotting attacks against Jewish and American targets in Europe and the United States. Prosecutors allege the suspect used social media to encourage violence and coordinate attacks inspired by Iran’s anti-Western messaging.

The White House has not directly responded to Khamenei’s latest remarks, though President Trump has recently warned Iran that the “clock is ticking” on negotiations and cautioned Tehran against escalating hostilities.

Foreign policy experts say the danger lies not only in direct military confrontation but also in the possibility that inflammatory rhetoric could inspire lone actors or extremist cells abroad. The growing war of words comes as fears continue to mount over a regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, Hezbollah, and Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere throughout the Middle East.

For now, officials on both sides continue to exchange warnings.
