DNC Chair Under Pressure To Resign After 2024 Election Autopsy

Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Ken Martin is once again facing calls to resign after some members of the party expressed outrage over the committee’s 2024 election analysis.

Earlier this week, the DNC released a nearly 200-page review of the 2024 presidential election. The report, which was prepared by Democratic strategist Paul Rivera and initially delivered to the DNC last fall, examines factors contributing to the party’s losses, including Kamala Harris’s defeat to Donald Trump.

The autopsy highlighted several organizational and strategic shortcomings. It points to the Biden administration’s limited efforts to position Harris as a successor earlier in the term, challenges in defining her candidacy beyond opposition to Trump, and difficulties in crafting effective messaging on key issues such as the economy and immigration.

The report also addressed broader trends within the Democratic Party, describing a pattern of stagnation in building durable voter relationships since 2008 and shortcomings in ground organization and coordination with outside groups. However, it notably omits discussion of certain topics, including the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict and Biden’s decision to remain in the race until late in the cycle.

In a letter accompanying the release, Martin emphasized the importance of transparency while acknowledging the report’s limitations. He noted that the DNC could not independently verify all assertions due to missing supporting data

Several Democrat lawmakers have expressed dissatisfaction with Martin’s leadership in light of the report and ongoing party challenges. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) went so far as to say that Martin should resign due to a lack of leadership.

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) agreed with a constituent who argued Martin should be replaced, stating, “I agree. … Having what we have right now is not doing it.” Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) indicated that the party needed a change, noting there did not appear to be a plan to turn things around.

Outside voices, including former Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer and Priorities USA executive director Danielle Butterfield, have also suggested that Martin is not the right person to guide the DNC forward.

Martin’s tenure as DNC chair has been racked with tension, particularly in regards to the party’s progressive factions.

Fundraising has presented a persistent difficulty for the DNC as well. Recent Federal Election Commission filings show the committee trailing its Republican counterpart significantly in both monthly receipts and cash on hand.

As of late March 2026, the DNC reported approximately $13.8 million in cash on hand compared to the RNC’s much larger reserves, along with outstanding debt. This financial gap has limited the party’s ability to support down-ballot candidates and organizational initiatives heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
