New York socialist lawmaker Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash from conservative critics after announcing plans for a new city-level government reform effort modeled in name and concept after federal “efficiency” initiatives previously associated with Elon Musk and the Trump-aligned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The proposed initiative, called the Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE), is being framed by Mamdani as an effort to streamline city operations and improve public service delivery.
Speaking about the program, Mamdani argued that previous efficiency efforts were misused for political and budget-cutting purposes.
“Elon Musk took that language and used it to cut as many jobs that were as critical as possible for so many of the neediest people across the country and across the world,” Mamdani said. “Ours is going to be a focus on actually delivering efficiency.”
The announcement immediately triggered criticism from Republican commentators and social media users who accused Mamdani and progressive Democrats of reversing course after previously condemning Musk-linked efficiency reforms.
Critics argue that the new initiative mirrors the same framework they previously attacked, calling it an example of political inconsistency.
Supporters of Mamdani, however, say the comparison is misleading, insisting that COGE is focused on accountability, transparency, and improving public services rather than large-scale workforce reductions.
The debate highlights a broader political clash over how government efficiency programs should be structured — and whether they are genuine reform efforts or political branding exercises.
As the proposal develops, it is expected to become a flashpoint in ongoing national arguments over government spending, public-sector employment, and the role of “efficiency commissions” in modern governance.
