President Donald Trump erupted after four House Republicans joined Democrats to pass a measure seeking to limit his Iran war powers, delivering a rare rebuke to the commander in chief amid the ongoing conflict with Tehran.
Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Tom Barrett of Michigan broke with most Republicans and voted alongside Democrats to approve the resolution by a 215-208 margin.
The measure, brought under the War Powers Resolution, would require congressional approval for continued U.S. military action against Iran.
Trump blasted the effort and the Republicans who backed it, arguing lawmakers should be supporting his administration’s efforts to end the conflict rather than tying his hands.
The president dismissed the vote as meaningless and accused critics of undermining attempts to secure peace.
The House action marked one of the most significant intraparty disagreements over Iran war powers since hostilities between the United States and Iran intensified.
Massie, who has repeatedly questioned U.S. involvement overseas, had been one of the leading Republican voices pushing for Congress to reclaim authority over decisions involving military force. Davidson also supported the effort, while Fitzpatrick and Barrett joined Democrats in backing the measure.
Supporters argued Congress has a constitutional responsibility to authorize prolonged military operations, while opponents warned the resolution could hamper the president’s ability to respond to threats and negotiate an end to the conflict.
The White House has maintained that the administration’s strategy is aimed at bringing stability to the region and has argued that additional restrictions from Congress are unnecessary.
Despite clearing the House, the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate and would likely encounter a veto if it ultimately reached Trump’s desk.
Still, the vote highlighted divisions within the Republican Party over Iran war powers and provided Democrats with an opportunity to challenge Trump’s handling of the conflict while several members of his own party openly broke ranks.
