California Gov. Gavin Newsom claimed Monday that President Donald Trump has ordered the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, alleging the move is politically motivated.
In a video posted to X, Gavin Newsom argued that Trump is targeting the couple because the Democratic governor is weighing a bid for the White House.
The governor did not specify what federal authorities are allegedly investigating or indicate whether he knows the precise nature of the probe.
″One by one, anyone who has challenged Donald Trump has ended up on his hit list,” Newsom said in a video statement. “And today, I proudly join that list.”
“He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us,” Newsom said. “They have not found a crime — they are simply trying to find one.”
Gavin Newsom likened his situation to that of several other prominent Trump critics who have faced federal scrutiny during the president’s second term, including former FBI Director James Comey, former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
According to Newsom, federal agents have recently contacted people close to him.
Newsom said agents in recent days “have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees.”
“And just in the last week, I’ve learned his campaign has reached my own home: to get me, he’s coming after my wife, Jen,” Newsom said. “A public servant. A woman who has dedicated her life to supporting women and girls.”
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker, has previously faced scrutiny over her work with charitable organizations.
The California governor further alleged that the Justice Department is seeking records and “abusing the grand jury process” in connection with the investigation.
“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets,” Newsom said. “He’s coming after me because I am considering running for President.”
“Because he hates that I’ve consistently called him out – over and over again – for his lies and deceit,” the governor said. “Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt President in American history.”
Neither Newsom nor his office provided additional details about the alleged investigation, and it remains unclear what specific matters, if any, federal authorities are examining.
