Suspect Taken Down After Montreal Shooting Leaves Officers, Civilian Dead

A suspected gunman was shot and killed by police Monday after a deadly shooting rampage in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood left at least two people dead, including a veteran police officer, and critically wounded another officer.

Authorities described the suspect as “neutralized” following a large-scale police response that triggered shelter-in-place orders across a significant section of Canada’s second-largest city. The shooting unfolded shortly after midday in the densely populated Côte-des-Neiges district, an area known for its diverse population and numerous businesses, schools, and community centers.

According to Montreal police, emergency alerts were issued around 12:30 p.m. warning residents to remain indoors as officers searched for what officials described as an “armed and dangerous suspect.”

Authorities say the suspect was armed with what witnesses described as a semi-automatic rifle and was dressed in camouflage clothing. Reports indicate the gunman exchanged fire with responding officers near a commercial area that includes grocery stores, shops, and residential buildings. Witnesses reported hearing a rapid succession of gunshots, with some estimating as many as 30 rounds fired during the confrontation.

Montreal police later confirmed that one officer was killed in the line of duty. A second officer, identified by local reports as a female officer, suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Officials have not released her identity or provided an update on her condition beyond describing it as serious.

In addition to the fallen officer, a civilian was also killed during the incident. Police have not yet disclosed whether the civilian was specifically targeted or was caught in the crossfire. The identities of both victims have been withheld pending notification of family members.

After a tense manhunt and gun battle, officers shot and killed the suspect. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, age, or possible motive, and investigators continue to piece together the events that led up to the violence. Officials have also not said whether the suspect had any known connections to the area or previous interactions with law enforcement.

The deadly encounter occurred in a neighborhood that includes a sizable Jewish community, with kosher businesses, schools, synagogues, and community organizations located nearby. While the location has prompted questions about whether the area itself may have been targeted, police emphasized that there is currently no evidence establishing a motive and cautioned against speculation as the investigation remains in its early stages.

Video from the scene circulating on social media showed a massive emergency response, with heavily armed officers, tactical teams, and emergency vehicles flooding the neighborhood. Residents described scenes of panic as parks emptied, businesses locked their doors, and families rushed indoors after hearing gunfire.

The shooting marks one of the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in Montreal in recent year. Investigators are expected to provide additional details in the coming hours as they work to determine the suspect’s background, possible motives, and whether anyone else may have been involved.
