Mitch McConnell’s Condition Shrouded In Mystery As Hospital Stay Reaches Two Weeks

It has been more than two weeks since Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to the hospital, and questions continue to swirl as his office remains tight-lipped about his condition.

A spokesperson for Mitch McConnell’s office told local news source WLKY on Sunday night there are “no updates at this time” regarding the longtime Kentucky senator’s health.

The office also declined to say whether McConnell remains hospitalized or has since been released.

McConnell’s office said he is not working this week, though that is not unusual because the Senate is currently out of session.

“As of Wednesday of last week, there are no Senate votes, as the Senate is not in session to vote,” the spokesperson said.

McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14.

The day after his hospitalization, Sen. Rand Paul told WLKY he had “heard he’s doing better.” But in the more than two weeks since, McConnell’s office has not disclosed why he was hospitalized, and it has released no additional information about his condition.

When news of his hospitalization first broke, spokesperson Dave Popp said only that McConnell “is receiving excellent care” but did not reveal why the Kentucky Republican had been admitted or identify the hospital where he was being treated.

The following day, Popp said McConnell “is fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune also expressed optimism about McConnell’s recovery, saying he was “hopeful” the veteran lawmaker would return to Capitol Hill soon, though he deferred to McConnell’s staff on a timeline. Thune added that McConnell “sounded good” when they spoke.

“He’s clearly dialed into what’s going on,” the South Dakota Republican said. “He’s following the stuff we’re doing this week up here.”

At 84, Mitch McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history and has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985.
