GOP Senator’s Office Responds To Report That He Is ‘Brain Dead’ Amid Hospitalization

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office offered no new details Tuesday about the Kentucky lawmaker’s condition as questions continue to swirl weeks into his hospitalization.

McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14 after paramedics found him unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home and performed CPR following what emergency responders identified as a cardiac arrest.

A spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the former Senate majority leader continues to recover while remaining engaged with Senate business.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” a spokesperson told the DCNF.

When the outlet sought additional information, McConnell’s office repeated the same statement without providing further details.

Emergency dispatch audio released last week showed a call came in at 8:36 a.m. on June 14 for an “unconscious” person at McConnell’s residence. An Advanced Life Support crew responded and classified the emergency as a cardiac arrest.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on June 15 that McConnell remained “dialed in” during Senate Republican conference calls and sounded good when they spoke by phone. Other senators have said they have not received updates about his condition.

“Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee said Tuesday.

McConnell’s office also issued the same update Thursday, saying the senator continued to improve while working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters during the congressional recess.

Meanwhile, journalist Desiree Townsend reported that neighbors have not seen activity at McConnell’s Washington home since he was hospitalized.

McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China during his hospital stay. His youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, also deactivated her social media accounts as speculation over the senator’s health intensified.

The 84-year-old has faced a string of health issues in recent years. He was hospitalized in February with flu-like symptoms and reportedly spent time in the intensive care unit from Feb. 2 through Feb. 10. Staff members have also frequently been seen assisting him while walking on Capitol Hill.

In October 2025, McConnell fell in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building after a reporter questioned him about Immigration and Customs Enforcement while he attempted to reach a handrail. He also suffered a concussion in a March 2023 fall and sustained minor injuries in another fall in December 2024 that temporarily left him using a wheelchair.

The longtime Republican leader also experienced two widely watched on-camera freezing episodes during the summer of 2023.
