JUST IN: Lindsey Graham’s Replacement Officially Revealed

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has announced the appointment Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to serve as the interim U.S. senator from South Carolina. The appointment is set to follow the sudden death of Senator Graham, who passed away after suffering a cardiac event on Saturday evening.

The announcement was made at a 4 p.m. press conference after news of the appointment wildly circulated online. McMaster stated that he asked Darline to serve early Sunday morning, at which point he relayed the idea to President Donald Trump, who endorsed the idea wholeheartedly.

Nordone thanked the governor, and the people of South Carolina, for the “honor and privilege” of continuing her brother’s work and pledged to support the president’s agenda.

President Trump publicly recommended Nordone for the position earlier in the day. “I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” the president posted on Truth Social.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) indicated support for the choice, telling reporters it would “make a lot of sense.” A spokesperson for McMaster confirmed the timing of the announcement but did not comment further on the decision prior to the 4 p.m. press conference.

Under South Carolina law, the governor has the authority to fill Senate vacancies by appointment until a special election can be held. Nordone’s selection would allow her to serve the remainder of Graham’s term, which expires in January 2027.

Nordone, also known as Darline Graham, has maintained a relatively private profile compared to her brother but has been closely connected to his life and career. She is Graham’s only sibling and was frequently mentioned by the senator in personal contexts, including his reflections on family life after the death of their parents.

Graham, who never married and had no children, often described Nordone as a key part of his support system. While not a public officeholder herself, her family ties to Graham place her within South Carolina’s Republican political circles.

Her appointment would mark a direct familial continuation in the seat held by her brother since 2003.

Because Graham had already secured the Republican nomination for the 2026 general election prior to his death, state election procedures call for a special primary to select a new Republican nominee. That primary is scheduled for August 11, 2026, followed by the general election in November.

The winner of the special election process will serve the full six-year term beginning in January 2027.

Potential candidates mentioned in early discussions include Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who narrowly lost a runoff election against Attorney General Alan Wilson in the state’s gubernatorial primary last month. Additional names floated include U.S. Reps. Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace, both of whom also ran in the gubernatorial primary.
