NORAD Jets Intercept 3 Planes Over New Jersey

NORAD F-16 fighter jets intercepted three planes over New Jersey on Sunday after more than 10 general aviation aircraft violated temporary flight restrictions in one day, officials said.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command said the restricted airspace violations happened over Bedminster and East Rutherford, areas that were under heightened flight restrictions.

Three of the aircraft required intercepts by NORAD F-16s.

During two of the intercepts, fighter jets deployed flares to get the pilots’ attention.

NORAD said the flares may have been visible to people on the ground but were not a danger to the public.

NORAD said the flares were deployed “with the highest regard for safety, burn out quickly and completely, and pose no danger to people on the ground.”

All of the aircraft were safely escorted out of the restricted areas, officials said.

The violations came as New Jersey dealt with major security restrictions tied to President Donald Trump’s presence in Bedminster and the World Cup final in East Rutherford.

The temporary flight restrictions were not suggestions.

They were federal airspace rules, and pilots who ignored them got a fast reminder from America’s air defense command.

NORAD said pilots intercepted by fighter aircraft should immediately contact emergency frequencies and reverse course until they receive further instructions.

“Should NORAD aircraft intercept a general aviation aircraft, the pilot should immediately come up on frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and turn around to reverse course until receiving additional instructions on one of those frequencies,” NORAD said.

The command also urged pilots to review all notices and temporary flight restrictions before taking off.

“Pilots: check your Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS) and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions,” NORAD said.

The episode comes amid heightened security around major events and political movements across the country, with federal officials also cracking down on drones and unauthorized aircraft near protected sites.

For private pilots, the message is simple,  check the airspace before flying.

Because if they wander into restricted airspace over New Jersey, the next thing they see may be an F-16 off their wing.
