Jon Bon Jovi abruptly ended his Madison Square Garden concert Thursday night after a medical issue forced the rock legend to stop the show early.
The 64-year-old frontman cut the eighth night of Bon Jovi’s “Forever Tour” residency short after about 90 minutes, stunning fans who had packed the famed New York City arena.
Bon Jovi had been joined during the show by Train frontman Pat Monahan for the band’s 1986 anthem “Livin’ On a Prayer.”
But the triumphant return soon turned into a worrying scene for fans who know the singer is still coming back from a major vocal cord ordeal that once threatened his future on stage.
“Don’t throw away your ticket stubs I’m going to figure something out okay, don’t [fear],” Bon Jovi told the audience, who applauded. “Just hang onto it, I’m going to figure out how to reschedule.”
He then told the crowd he had to call it a night.
“I’m gonna have to cool it for a night,” he added, before exiting the stage. “I feel great, I’ll see you again soon, bye bye.”
A representative for Bon Jovi later said the singer had been dealing with a sinus infection.
“Jon Bon Jovi spoke from stage and told fans he has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show’s early ending,” a rep for Bon Jovi tells PEOPLE. “As part of the Bon Jovi residency at Madison Square Garden, Jon has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band. Updated information will be available shortly.”
The nine sold-out MSG shows mark Bon Jovi’s return to the stage after a four-year hiatus and vocal surgery.

He has been performing with original members Tico Torres and David Bryan, along with Hugh McDonald, John Shanks, Phil X and Everett Bradley.
The setlist has leaned heavily on the New Jersey band’s biggest hits, a reminder of a blue-collar rock catalog that has outlasted decades of music industry trends.

Bon Jovi told PEOPLE in 2024 that he was not sure whether he would be able to return to the demands of live touring after his health scare.
After Bon Jovi’s 2022 tour ended, he underwent vocal cord medialization to repair a damaged cord.
“I’d often joked and said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose was my finger,” he told PEOPLE for his recent cover story in June. “I never did anything to hurt the cords; I didn’t have any excesses. I’m a trained vocalist. I’ve practiced the craft.”
The “Wanted Dead or Alive” singer said a doctor told him the cord was “atrophying.”
“I’m fully recovered,” he said, noting that the surgery was successful. “It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith.”
Bon Jovi formed in New Jersey in 1983 and became one of America’s defining arena-rock bands, breaking through internationally with the 1986 album “Slippery When Wet.”
The album featured “Livin’ On a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name,” songs that turned the band into stadium staples.
Bon Jovi later scored another massive hit with the 2000 anthem “It’s My Life.”
For fans, Thursday’s shortened show was less about outrage and more about concern.
They had watched Bon Jovi fight his way back from surgery, rebuild his voice and return to one of the biggest stages in the country.
Now they are waiting to see when the rock veteran can make good on his promise to finish what he started.
