U.S. Walks Out Of U.N. Meeting After France Criticizes Trump Administration

A rare diplomatic showdown unfolded at the United Nations on Monday after the United States delegation walked out of a Security Council meeting while France’s ambassador was speaking, marking a dramatic escalation in a growing dispute between the longtime allies over human rights and the leadership of the United Nations.

The protest came during a Security Council session focused on Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Rather than remain for France’s remarks, members of the U.S. delegation stood up and exited the chamber in what American officials later described as a deliberate response to comments made by French officials in recent days.

The diplomatic clash traces back to a vote last week in the U.N. General Assembly on whether to grant U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk another four-year term. The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with 144 countries voting in favor. The United States was among just 10 nations that opposed the extension, arguing that the human rights office has too often criticized democratic nations while failing to hold authoritarian governments accountable.

Following the vote, France’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva publicly criticized Washington, saying the United States had joined countries such as Russia and North Korea in opposing the measure. The post argued that America was no longer serving as the global standard on human rights, prompting a sharp response from the Trump administration.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz accused France of supporting a human rights chief who unfairly targets democracies such as the United States and Israel while showing insufficient resolve toward some of the world’s most repressive governments. The exchange quickly spilled from social media into the halls of the United Nations.

During Monday’s Security Council meeting, Dan Negrea, an alternate U.S. representative to the United Nations, explained why the American delegation had walked out.

“There is a member of this council that will feign moral outrage and pretend to lecture the rest of us,” Negrea said before accusing France of using “disingenuous grandstanding” and “politicized drivel.” He added that the United States would continue leaving the room during French remarks unless Paris abandoned what he described as “condescending and disrespectful rhetoric.”

“That is why we walked out during France’s intervention.”

France chose not to engage directly with the protest during the meeting. Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont proceeded with his prepared remarks on Ukraine, emphasizing continued support for Kyiv and reaffirming France’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations without mentioning the American walkout.

The Trump administration has taken a more skeptical view of many international organizations, reducing U.S. participation in several U.N.-related bodies while arguing that global institutions have become increasingly politicized.

Walkouts during Security Council meetings are uncommon, particularly between permanent members that have traditionally worked closely together on many international issues.
