VIDEO: New Yorkers Respond After Man Firebombs ICE Building

A week after an anti-ICE protest turned violent outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan, the incident continues to fuel debate over political violence, public safety, and the nation’s increasingly heated political climate.

The discussion resurfaced this week after Turning Point USA’s Frontlines released a street interview video featuring conversations with New Yorkers about the July 20 attack outside 26 Federal Plaza. The federal complex houses U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an immigration court and several other federal agencies.

Several people suffered minor injuries during the incident. Authorities said a Federal Protective Service officer was hurt while tackling the suspect, while at least one bystander was struck by fireworks and another civilian sustained minor injuries during the chaos. Officials credited the rapid response by security personnel with preventing a more serious outcome.

In the newly released Frontlines video, interviewer Bo Alford showed passersby footage of the attack and asked whether they believed political tensions were contributing to acts of violence. Nearly every person interviewed rejected the use of violence regardless of political views.

“I do not condone any violence,” one man responded after watching the video. “Violence is not good.”

Another New Yorker reacted to the footage by saying, “I don’t think violence is the answer at all. Violence only breeds more violence.”

Others acknowledged that emotions surrounding immigration policy remain high but argued that destroying property or attacking government facilities only undermines a political cause.

“I understand it’s angry,” one interviewee said. “But you just make it look bad on your part.”

Another person added that while people may disagree with the current administration, “You wouldn’t set a federal building on fire. That’s crazy.”

Several participants also expressed concern about the country’s increasingly polarized political environment. One suggested that political disagreements have reached unhealthy levels, encouraging people to keep “an open mind” and listen to opposing viewpoints rather than allowing disagreements to escalate into violence.

At the conclusion of the interviews, Alford summarized what he described as the overwhelming sentiment from those he spoke with.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to condemn arson,” he said, while adding that political tensions remain elevated across the country.

The attack unfolded when authorities say a man later identified as former U.S. Army soldier Andrew Arrabaca arrived outside the building carrying anti-ICE materials and an assortment of weapons. According to investigators, Arrabaca allegedly poured a flammable liquid across the entrance before igniting it, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air.

Officers quickly rushed toward the suspect, subdued him and took him into custody before the fire could spread further. Federal officials said investigators recovered fireworks, pellet guns, knives, axes, a machete and what they described as a manifesto from the suspect.

A sign reading “ICE Off Our Streets” was also recovered and is believed to reflect the alleged motive behind the attack. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation and has described the incident as an apparent anti-government attack targeting a federal facility.
