Elon Musk is reportedly preparing to pour more than $100 million into the 2026 midterm elections, marking a major political comeback after last year’s highly publicized split with President Donald Trump and threats to launch a third political party.
According to a report from The New York Times, Musk has authorized his super PAC, America PAC, to spend between $100 million and $120 million on a sweeping voter outreach operation designed to help Republican candidates in battleground Senate and House races across the country.
The effort is expected to begin as early as next month and would focus heavily on grassroots campaigning, including door-knocking and voter contact operations in multiple competitive states. The spending would make Musk one of the Republican Party’s largest financial backers heading into November’s elections.
People familiar with the plans told the Times that America PAC intends to target Senate races in at least five states: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan and Ohio. The organization is also reportedly discussing possible investments in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas, all states expected to feature closely watched races.
House contests are also expected to receive significant support, with California, Wisconsin and Washington among the states under consideration.
America PAC declined to discuss its budget or specific strategy but confirmed it intends to play an active role in competitive Senate and House races this fall.
The reported investment comes after months of speculation about Musk’s political future. Following the 2024 presidential election, Musk emerged as the GOP’s biggest individual donor, spending nearly $300 million to help elect President Trump and other Republican candidates. He also became one of the administration’s highest-profile allies, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during Trump’s second term.
By late 2025, Musk had largely repaired his relationship with Trump, and Republican strategists reportedly began discussing ways for him to once again play a major financial role in future elections. Unlike the 2024 campaign, however, Musk is not expected to serve as a public face of the Republican effort.
Instead of hosting campaign events and town halls, America PAC is reportedly focusing on building a large field operation aimed at turning out Republican voters. The organization is expected to coordinate closely with other conservative groups, including Americans for Prosperity and Sentinel Action Fund, as Republicans expand cooperation following a recent Supreme Court ruling that made coordination between party committees and candidates less costly.
Chris Young, Musk’s longtime political adviser who oversaw America PAC’s 2024 operations, is expected to lead the new effort.
The timing could prove significant as Republicans seek to defend and expand their congressional majorities. While Democratic Senate candidates have posted strong fundraising numbers in several key races, Republicans have maintained a sizable advantage through super PACs and outside political organizations. Musk’s reported commitment would further strengthen that edge heading into the final months before Election Day.
The report also represents a notable shift from Musk’s own comments just over a year ago.
After a conservative-backed candidate lost a closely watched Wisconsin Supreme Court race in 2025, Musk suggested he planned to reduce his political involvement. During an interview with Bloomberg that spring, he said he intended to spend “a lot less” on politics because he believed he had already “done enough.”
More recently, Musk reflected on his time in politics during an interview with The Economist, saying he believed he had become too involved in political affairs.
“I think I got a little too involved in politics,” Musk said. “I got carried away, frankly.”
Despite those remarks, the reported nine-figure commitment suggests the billionaire is once again preparing to become one of the Republican Party’s most influential financial supporters as the battle for control of Congress enters its final stretch.
