African Migrants Storm Second Spanish City, Set Fires

Thousands of African invaders on Tuesday stormed the enclave of Melilla, a Spanish territory located across the Strait of Gibraltar. The incident comes just hours after thousands of invaders did the same in the similarly-situated enclave of Ceuta.

In Ceuta, state broadcaster TVE reported that between 2,000 and 3,000 people had crossed from Morocco, many by swimming around the Tarajal breakwater or passing through breached sections of fencing. Additional estimates placed the number well above 10,000.

Dramatic footage from the scene shows thousands of invaders pouring across border fences and quickly overwhelming border guards. Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, described the situation as “a situation of total humanitarian and social emergency” and requested that the central government declare a national emergency while seeking additional police and military support to maintain border integrity and public safety.

The Spanish government responded by deploying military units to reinforce the Guardia Civil in Ceuta. An official statement indicated that “the Armed Forces will reinforce the Civil Guard in the exercise of its powers and those that may be necessary to maintain security in the city of Ceuta.”

Spain’s Interior Ministry stated that it would work with Moroccan authorities on the return of those who entered irregularly and affirmed cooperation to address the flows. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the government was “fully committed to providing an immediate response to the situation in Ceuta” and planned to travel to the enclave the following day with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

Later that evening, around 10 p.m. local time, attention shifted to Melilla. The Government Delegation in Melilla reported an attempt at mass entry involving an indeterminate number of Moroccan nationals at the Beni Enzar post and the Dique Sur area. A spokesperson confirmed the temporary closure of the border crossing while security forces intervened, stating that the measure would remain in place for an undetermined period and requesting that residents avoid the perimeter so as not to hinder operations.

Explosions were reported by local residents, while footage from the scene showed invaders setting vehicles on fire. Additional footage captured entrants chanting “Allahu Akbar” as they poured across the border, while others broke into homes in the area.

Sources involved in the security operation in the South Dike area estimated that approximately 400 people entered Melilla. Melilla’s president, Juan José Imbroda, stated that “about 400 have managed to enter,” noting an increase in arrivals during July but distinguishing the scale from events in Ceuta.

No official tallies of injuries or additional fatalities were immediately released for the Melilla incident. Spanish police directed groups away from the border zone, and at least two ambulances were positioned nearby. The Government Delegation in Melilla continued to urge residents to rely on official information.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez — whose government recently granted amnesty to millions of overwhelmingly Muslim invaders — said the government was “fully committed to providing an immediate response to the situation in Ceuta.” He added, “We are mobilizing all necessary resources, working with Moroccan and international authorities, and preparing the necessary measures to restore normalcy as soon as possible.”
