NEW: Longtime Democrat Rep. Hospitalized After Hit And Run Crash

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) was hospitalized Sunday after a hit-and-run vehicle crash in Toledo, Ohio, her office confirmed in a statement.

According to a statement from Kaptur’s congressional office, the 80-year-old lawmaker was a passenger in a vehicle traveling to a church service when the car she was in was struck. “This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck. She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” the statement read.

“We look forward to additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident. Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash. She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”

According to the Toledo Police Department, two individuals were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Kaptur was among those taken for treatment at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. Police have described the crash as a hit-and-run.

Morgan Valley, a witness to the crash, stated that she called 911 after hearing the crash and observed paramedics removing a woman from a vehicle. Valley also reported seeing a man run from a vehicle and provided a description to police.

Another witness indicated that the driver of one of the vehicles involved was picked up by a separate vehicle and left the area shortly after the incident. Other individuals present said they heard the crash but did not see it occur.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed that an individual involved in the crash remained at large as of Sunday afternoon and stated that “everyone seems to be fine.” Kaptur’s office has not identified the driver of the vehicle in which she was a passenger or specified which of the vehicles at the scene carried her.

Kaptur, who has served continuously in the U.S. House since 1983, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in the history of the chamber. She represents a district centered on Toledo and surrounding areas in northwest Ohio.
