JUST IN: Impeachment-Obsessed Democrat Loses Primary To Leftist Challenger

Rep. Shri Thanedar’s turbulent tenure in Congress came to an abrupt end Tuesday after NBC News projected the Michigan Democrat lost his party’s primary to state Rep. Donavan McKinney, a progressive challenger who capitalized on growing frustration with the incumbent.

The loss marks another win for the Democratic Party’s left flank, which rallied behind McKinney with backing from Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and influential progressive groups including Justice Democrats and Leaders We Deserve.

For Thanedar, the defeat follows months of political baggage that made him one of the Democratic Party’s most vulnerable incumbents.

The congressman drew criticism from fellow Democrats after launching an impeachment push against President Donald Trump without the blessing of party leadership. Even so, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top House Democrats ultimately endorsed his reelection bid.

Thanedar’s campaign finances also came under scrutiny. Federal filings showed his campaign lost more than $2 million this year through cryptocurrency investments, an unusual use of campaign funds. He also faced criticism for spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on television ads from his congressional office that closely resembled campaign commercials.

The Michigan lawmaker first won the Detroit-area seat in 2022 after largely self-funding his campaign. He initially aligned himself with progressives before splitting with the Democratic Socialists of America in 2023. Thanedar has said he quit the organization, while the local chapter maintains he was expelled. He later rebranded himself as a stronger supporter of Israel.

McKinney, 34, entered the race roughly 16 months before the primary and built his campaign around his upbringing in poverty, becoming the first member of his family to attend college and his record in the Michigan Legislature.

The democratic socialist campaigned on a platform that includes “Medicare for All,” new restrictions on U.S. military aid to Israel and major federal investments in housing and clean energy.

McKinney’s victory also underscores the strength of Michigan’s organized progressive movement, which united behind his campaign as Democratic voters weighed both Thanedar’s personal controversies and broader dissatisfaction with establishment figures in the party.
