Reports of ordinary Iranians resorting to stealing basic groceries from supermarket shelves have underscored the severity of the country’s deepening economic crisis, with analysts warning that the Islamic Republic’s economy is nearing a critical breaking point.
An investigation published by the Iranian newspaper Jahan-e Sanat detailed accounts from supermarket workers of customers concealing inexpensive items like cheese, butter, cakes, pastries, and meat or consuming packaged products inside stores without paying. One employee, identified only as Amirhossein, told the newspaper that he had witnessed several suspected thefts over the previous 10 months.
“I think poverty is the main reason,” he said. “You cannot judge everyone the same way, but when someone steals a simple item, they are probably under enormous pressure.”
These anecdotal reports align with stark macroeconomic data, according to Miad Maleki, an associate fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former U.S. Treasury Department sanctions official. “These are anecdotal, but they align with hard data,” Maleki told Fox News.
“Iran is already inside the tipping zone. But a genuine ‘tipping point’ wouldn’t be a single dramatic event. It would look like what’s already unfolding in slow motion: currency collapse, World War II-level food inflation and now theft of staples, reaching a threshold where basic caloric/nutritional access breaks down for a large share of the population, not just the poorest.”

Official statistics paint a grim picture of hyperinflation eroding purchasing power. Data from the Statistical Center of Iran showed point-to-point food and beverage inflation reaching 113.8% and food items at 112.5% in March 2026 compared to the prior year, with bread and cereals surging 140% and milk, cheese, and eggs rising 116.8%. By mid-2026, overall year-on-year inflation hit peaks near 88.6% in June before easing slightly to around 87.9% in July, while annual rates hovered in the 60-66% range according to different official measures.
Food inflation remained in triple digits for months, with oils and fats exceeding 270% in some periods, red meat and poultry over 178%, and dairy products similarly elevated.
In addition, the Iranian rial has suffered catastrophic depreciation. The U.S. dollar traded at approximately 1.5 million rials in January 2026 before climbing past 1.94 million on the open market by July, amid renewed regional conflict and sanctions pressure.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly acknowledged the hardships while attributing them primarily to external forces. Experts note that economic distress has historically posed greater risks to the regime than ideological challenges. Maleki pointed to the November 2019 protests sparked by gasoline price hikes as evidence that “the regime’s own history proves it, because its most dangerous moments have been economic, not ideological.”
He cautioned, however, that desperation alone may not yield rapid political change, given the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij forces’ readiness to suppress unrest.
“While a single newspaper’s petty-crime roundup isn’t proof of imminent collapse, it’s a credible symptom layered on top of verified macro data,” Maleki added. “And when or if this conflict ends and market demand is not suppressed by a state of war, inflation will skyrocket even higher.”
