Rob Sand’s trip to the Iowa State Fair took a humiliating turn Thursday when the Democratic candidate for governor fled a barrage of questions and holed up in a bathroom stall.
The sitting state auditor spent roughly 15 minutes behind a locked door as Iowa voters and activists affiliated with Turning Point Action, the political advocacy arm tied to TPUSA, waited outside.
Sand eventually emerged to louder boos and more questions about his record and past. But instead of answering, he headed for the exit and left the fairgrounds.
The embarrassing retreat offered a blunt reminder that turning Iowa blue remains a tall order. Sand wants to lead the state, but critics said he looked unwilling to face the voters he hopes to represent when the questions got uncomfortable.
Supporters of the confrontation, including TPUSA-aligned activists and other social media users, rejected claims that Sand had been harassed. They argued that voters were demanding accountability and giving the Democratic hopeful an unmistakable send-off.

Still, Sand cannot be written off. Iowa’s 2026 governor’s race is shaping up as a genuine fight, with Republican businessman Zach Lahn standing between Sand and the governor’s mansion.
The contest is for an open seat after Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds decided against seeking another term. That gives Democrats their best opportunity in years, even in a state that has moved sharply to the right. President Donald Trump carried Iowa by 13 percentage points in 2024, while Reynolds cruised to reelection by 18 points in 2022.
Sand has survived tough political terrain before. He is Iowa’s only Democratic statewide officeholder and narrowly won reelection as auditor in 2022 by fewer than 3,000 votes. That history has helped him sell himself as a Democrat capable of attracting independents and some Republicans.
