ESPN suffered an embarrassing on-air mishap Tuesday when a tribute to network founder Bill Rasmussen was abruptly cut short, just hours after news broke that he had died at age 93.
The awkward moment unfolded on “First Take” as the network attempted to honor the man who helped build ESPN into the sports broadcasting giant it is today.
An image of Rasmussen appeared on screen as the tribute began, but the segment barely had time to breathe before programming suddenly shifted to Pat McAfee’s show.
“Hello, beautiful people,” McAfee said, apparently unaware that he had just stepped on the network’s memorial to its own founder.
His show then continued as usual.
The blunder quickly stood out as a particularly rough look for a network that has faced years of criticism from viewers who believe ESPN has drifted away from sports and deeper into politics, culture-war debates and left-wing activism.
For decades, ESPN built its brand on around-the-clock sports coverage, highlights and analysis. But in more recent years, the network has increasingly found itself at the center of political controversies and backlash over programming decisions.
“First Take” itself has evolved from a sports debate program into a broader platform where social and political issues regularly collide with athletics.

Tuesday’s technical mess, however, had nothing to do with politics. It appeared to be a straightforward production failure during what should have been a carefully planned tribute to one of the most important figures in the company’s history.
Live television productions are timed down to the second, with producers, directors and hosts coordinating transitions between programs.
Somewhere in that process, ESPN failed to give Rasmussen’s tribute the space it was supposed to have.
Rasmussen died at his Florida home from complications related to Parkinson’s disease, according to ESPN.
He developed the idea for ESPN alongside his son Scott Rasmussen, initially envisioning a Connecticut-focused sports operation before expanding the concept into a national 24-hour cable network.
At the time, the idea was considered a major gamble.
Rasmussen had recently been fired from his job as communications director for the New England Whalers when he began pursuing the concept that would eventually become ESPN.
He reportedly maxed out his credit card and used a $9,000 advance to secure valuable space on a communications satellite, laying the groundwork for a sports network that many industry insiders initially believed had little chance of surviving.
Instead, ESPN grew into one of the most influential sports media brands in the country.
Scott Rasmussen later became known outside the sports world for founding Rasmussen Reports, the polling company he launched in 2003.
Bill Rasmussen’s death marked the loss of the man whose risky idea helped permanently reshape sports television.
ESPN eventually published a full tribute to Rasmussen online, but the network’s bungled television sendoff left viewers with a far less polished reminder of just how much the operation has changed since its founder first bet everything on a 24-hour sports channel.
