Jurors weighing the fate of Lindsay Clancy revealed Tuesday that they were deadlocked after hours of deliberations, but the judge ordered them to keep trying.
The panel informed Judge William Sullivan in a note that “after many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision.”
Sullivan sent the nine women and three men back to continue deliberating without a verdict.
Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan. She acknowledges killing the children but maintains she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time.

Jurors must decide whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings or experiencing postpartum psychosis, as her defense contends.
The jury can convict Clancy of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter. It can also acquit her or find her not criminally responsible.

Cully Stimson, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told Fox News that Massachusetts jurors are generally instructed not to consider the maximum punishment attached to the charges before them.
But according to Stimson, Judge William Sullivan did the opposite and told jurors the maximum penalty for each charge.
Stimson warned that the move could shift the jury’s focus away from the narrow question of guilt and toward the potential consequences of a conviction.
That, he argued, could lead to “sentence bargaining,” where jurors weigh punishment while deliberating and potentially settle on a lesser charge such as manslaughter.
“The fact that the judge threw this into the punch bowl disturbs me,” he said.
