The jury in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial sent a note to Plymouth Superior Court Judge William F. Sullivan on Thursday afternoon, during the sixth day of deliberations.
The specific contents of the note were not yet publicly available, though the panel of nine women and three men have remained deadlocked over the preceding days, which has made a mistrial outcome increasingly likely should they remain at an impasse. The note prompted prosecutors, including Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz, defense counsel, and Clancy’s parents to enter the courtroom. Media and observers lined the hallway as a sidebar conference took place between the judge and attorneys.
Just before 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time, re-read the jury instructions and noted that jurors must follow them as they were given by the judge. He then sent them back for further deliberations.

Deliberations had resumed that morning at approximately 9:13 a.m. after the jury was sent out with no additional instruction. By early afternoon the panel had accumulated roughly 35 hours of total deliberation time across six days. The jury took a lunch break around 12:54 p.m. and returned at 2 p.m. before sending the note.
Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse, has admitted to killing her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — on January 24, 2023, by strangling them with exercise bands in the basement of the family’s Duxbury home while her husband was out of the house. She then slashed her wrists and neck and jumped from a second-story window in a suicide attempt that left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and is asserting a lack of criminal responsibility, commonly known as an insanity defense, based on claims of postpartum psychosis and other mental health conditions.
The latest note followed two prior reports of deadlock. On Tuesday morning, September 1, after about 23 hours of deliberations over four days, the jury sent a note stating, “After many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision.”
Sullivan instructed the jurors to continue, noting the length of the trial and the volume of evidence. They later requested an early dismissal that afternoon and were sent home.
On Wednesday afternoon, after additional hours that brought the total near 28 to 29.5 hours, the jury sent a similar note. “After much deliberation we are still unable to come to a unanimous decision,” that communication read.
Sullivan then read the Tuey-Rodriguez instruction, also known as a dynamite charge. The instruction directs jurors to re-examine their views, give due regard to others’ opinions, consider that they are as well-positioned as any other panel to decide the case, and recognize that it is desirable for the case to be resolved, while reminding them not to surrender honestly held convictions. The jury continued briefly before being dismissed for the day and directed to return Thursday morning.
