Rollie Sheldon, the former Yankees pitcher who was part of two World Series championship teams in the early 1960s, has died at 89.
The Yankees announced Sheldon’s death Wednesday. According to an online obituary, he died Aug. 31 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“The Yankees mourn the passing of Rollie Sheldon and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones,” the Yankees said in a statement on social media.
Born in Putnam, Connecticut, Sheldon served in the U.S. Air Force before attending Texas A&M and later UConn, where he played both baseball and basketball.
The right-hander signed with the Yankees before the 1960 season after a scout apparently believed he was younger than he actually was.
Sheldon was 23 at the time, but the scout believed he was 20. Sheldon decided not to correct him.
“If [scout Henry Hesse] thought I was 20,” Sheldon continued, “I wouldn’t say anything because I didn’t want to blow this opportunity to play pro ball. I interrupted my parents’ ‘coffee break’ and asked them to sign for me,” Sheldon said of his signing, according to the Society for American Baseball Research. “They knew I had always wanted to play pro ball but were surprised I would sign with the Yanks when I was a Red Sox fan…I believe anyone would have done the same thing…keep quiet.”

The decision paid off quickly.
Sheldon dominated in the New York-Penn League, going 15-1 with a 2.88 ERA before earning a call to the Bronx in 1961.
He immediately made an impact, finishing his rookie season with an 11-5 record and 3.60 ERA over 35 appearances, including 21 starts.
Sheldon also threw two shutouts that season, the most he would record in any year of his major league career.
He was part of the Yankees teams that won back-to-back World Series championships in 1961 and 1962, though he did not appear in either Fall Classic.
He did make a World Series appearance in 1964, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings as the Yankees fell to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Over more than three seasons with New York, Sheldon posted a 23-15 record with a 4.14 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 389 1/3 innings.
For Sheldon, getting the chance to wear Yankees pinstripes remained one of the defining achievements of his life, even though he had grown up rooting for the rival Boston Red Sox.
“Roland has a special place in his heart and is so grateful to manager Ralph Houk for believing in him and making his dream come true in 1961 of becoming a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees,” his obituary said.
Sheldon was traded to the Kansas City Athletics during the 1965 season and later finished his major league career with the Red Sox in 1966.
He continued pitching in affiliated baseball through 1970.
Sheldon leaves behind a legacy tied to one of the most celebrated stretches in Yankees history, when the franchise remained a dominant force and piled up championships with some of baseball’s biggest names.
