A 62-year-old man was fatally stabbed to death and nearly beheaded in what authorities have described as a “random” attack in Round Rock, Texas.
On Labor Day morning, September 7, police Williamson County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of an injured person in a park in the 2400 block of Chandler Creek Boulevard in Round Rock. Emergency medical personnel determined that the person was dead upon arrival.
The victim was later identified as Andrew James Wimsatt, 62, of Austin. Wimsatt was a civil engineer with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked as a research engineer at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute after earlier service with the Texas Department of Transportation, including as a pavement engineer.
According to an arrest affidavit, surveillance video from a Chandler Creek Homeowners Association system showed Wimsatt sitting on a park bench at about 10:55 a.m. A man later identified as Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu Jr., 26, of Round Rock, approached him from behind about three minutes later.
The video showed Ogbodiegwu wrapping his left arm around Wimsatt and stabbing him in the neck. Wimsatt attempted to push the attacker away but was unable to do so. Ogbodiegwu stabbed him several more times.

After Wimsatt fell, the attacker continued to stab him, then placed a knee on his chest and moved the knife across his neck before wiping the blade and running toward the park’s pool area and then toward N. A.W. Grimes Boulevard. A witness found the body near the bench around 11:15 a.m. and called 911.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office stated that preliminary evidence indicated the attack was a random act and that Wimsatt and Ogbodiegwu did not know each other. No motive was given in the affidavit.
Investigators used additional video from nearby homes, a McDonald’s on E. Palm Valley Boulevard, and a residence. Footage showed a man matching the attacker’s description walking toward the park area around 10:22 a.m. and returning around 11:05 a.m., consistent with the time the attacker left the scene at 11:01 a.m. The same man appeared at the McDonald’s at 1:54 p.m. in different clothes and left as a passenger in a red SUV registered to an address about a mile from the park.
Detectives located Ogbodiegwu at a home on Matagorda Drive. When shown a still image from the park video, he confirmed it was him but said he had not gone to the park that morning and mentioned a twin brother whose name he could not provide.
A search warrant yielded a white trash bag in an outdoor garbage can containing the clothing seen in the park video and a 5.5-inch wooden-handled knife. The sweatpants had red stains, while the blade tested presumptive positive for blood.
Ogbodiegwu was arrested late Monday night and charged with first-degree murder. Bond was set at $1 million.
